"Three quarter length portrait of a clean shaven young man (Egerton Cleeve) seated facing the camera. He wears a dark jacket, open to reveal a white waistcoat and shirt with down-turned collar with a small black cravat or tie, and dark trousers. His left arm rests on a table covered with a pale cloth and a book. His left hand is closed in a fist and rests on his left leg. His legs appear crossed. Part of the oval wood back of the chair is visible, as is part of the padded seat. A grave in the British Cemetery in Montevideo, Uruguay (Plot: F 006) gives Egerton Cleeve's date of birth as August 9, 1827, place: Woolwich, Greater London, England, and his death as April 30, 1857 in Montevideo. An accompanying note to the portrait states that the subject died young in Montevideo of yellow fever, so this may be his grave (see link)."
