Interior scene of a woman standing by a fireplace, with tongs, grate and fender. She stands with her right elbow resting on the mantelpiece supporting her head. She wears a striped, almost plaid, ankle length skirt, with a dark jacket, white blouse, and a dark neck ribbon. Her hair is fastened back with a middle parting. Behind the mantelpiece is a mirror overmantel that shows her reflection. Above that hangs a portrait with oval frame, in front of this a rectangular shaped picture. Further back along the wall is hung an ornate set of wooden shelves with ornaments on including a pair of vases or candlesticks. Also visible in the scene is a rug in front of the fire place, an octagonal side table with a vase of flowers on it, a marble bust in the background, patterned curtains in front of a window where a tassel also hangs. More ornaments decorate the mantelpiece. In the foreground is a writing table covered with a table cloth, holding books, binoculars, a small chest (a box with padded interior) and a fan. Above this table on the wall is a statue of a classic female seated deity (?) on a very elaborate figurative wall-bracket. A waste-paper basket is on the floor, bottom left of the image, below the table, and a foot-stool to the right.
