Group of four, probably a family, seen outside the back door of a dwelling. A boy on the right hand side is plucking a dead bird, watched by an older woman in a cap wearing a patterned dress and what appears to be an apron. To her right a girl smiles at the camera. She wears a bonnet with lappets, a dress and shawl. Both women are in front of a doorway at the basement level. An older boy to the left smokes a German-style pipe, sits on the ground at the top of the stairs to the basement. He wears a dark jacket, trousers and cap. Behind him is a wood water-barrel with a down pipe running into it.The back of the house is brickwork. Another dead bird lies in the foreground of the yard,. Various other tools and implements are arranged on the floor of the yard: watering can, what look like digging tools, a jug, a drinking glass, and a rough carrying-basket lying on its side. The corner of a window with a protruding sill is visible above the younger boy's head. Hand coloured. Note that the oval metal mount looks wrong; it has been squashed into the case and is distorted.
